Prostate screening

Prostate screening or review refers to the process of performing screening tests in asymptomatic men to identify possible cases of prostate cancer in its early stages, when it is more treatable.

¿Por qué resulta tan útil hacer un screening?

The goal of screening is to detect the disease before symptoms appear, which can allow for more effective treatment and improve survival rates.

Which patients should undergo a prostate check-up?

According to the European Urology Guidelines, it is recommended to perform prostate screening or a check-up for:

All men over 50 years old.

From the age of 45 if there is a family history of prostate cancer (father, brother, or uncle).

What does the screening consist of?

Ideally, this prostate check-up or review should be done once a year and consists of two tests.

Blood test with a prostate marker

Also known as PSA, for its acronym in English.

Digital rectal exam or MRI

Traditionally, a digital rectal exam was performed on all patients. Currently, when there is suspicion of possible prostate cancer, the digital rectal exam is often replaced with a prostate MRI to study it with more precision, and to decide if prostate biopsies using image fusion should be performed.
