Vasectomy reversal

At Andrología Barcelona, we have highly experienced urologists specialized in techniques for vasectomy reversal.

What is vasectomy reversal?

Vasectomy reversal is a surgery that reverses a vasectomy. During this procedure, the surgeon reconnects each tube (vas deferens) that carries sperm from the testicle to the semen. After a successful reversal, your semen will once again contain sperm, increasing the likelihood of impregnating your partner.

Procedures and techniques used

Reversión vasectomía

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to return home the same day. The steps are as follows:

  1. Anesthesia: It can be either local or epidural.
  2. Incisions: Two small incisions are made.
  3. Reconection: Using a microsurgical technique and a high-powered microscope, the vas deferens are reconnected.
  4. Closure: The small incisions are closed after the surgery is completed.

At Andrology Barcelona, we use two main techniques for vasectomy reversal.

Vasovasostomy

It involves reconnecting the two ends of the vas deferens that were severed during the vasectomy.

Epididymovasostomy

Used when no sperm are found in the vas deferens fluid, involving a more complex procedure but with the same success rate as vasovasostomy.

What factors affect the success of vasectomy reversal?

Time since the Vasectomy

The success rate is inversely proportional to the time that has passed since the vasectomy. Less than 5 years: up to 98%; more than 15 years: around 35%.

Presence of Granuloma

It indicates a good prognosis for fertility recovery. Through examination in the consultation, the presence or absence of this granuloma can be observed.

Recovery and follow-up after vasectomy reversal

Recovery should be quick and relatively comfortable. Pain can be controlled with oral medications. Most patients return to their normal routine within a week and should avoid intense physical activities for two or three weeks, although they are likely unable to have sexual intercourse for about two to three weeks.

Additionally, vasectomy reversal has the advantage of maintaining fertility for many years, offering an important alternative to sperm retrieval techniques for in vitro fertilization.

How do we manage postoperative follow-up?

  • Semen analysis: Every two or three months until the sperm count stabilizes or pregnancy is achieved.
  • Time to achieve pregnancy: It varies, but on average it takes about a year, although some achieve pregnancy within the first few months.
