Male infertility study: How to know if you are infertile
What is male infertility?
Male infertility is the inability of a man to contribute to the conception of a child. This health issue can be caused by a variety of factors that affect the quality or quantity of sperm, as well as its ability to fertilize an egg. Male infertility is not an isolated topic; in fact, it is relatively common and affects a significant percentage of couples of reproductive age.
According to studies, approximately 15% of couples experience difficulties conceiving, and in nearly half of these cases, the male factor is a significant contributing factor.
What are the most common causes of infertility in men?
Hormonal issues
Hormonal imbalances that regulate sperm production.
Testicular problems
Damage or abnormalities in the testicles.
Genetic factors
Genetic abnormalities that affect sperm production.
Obstructions in the sperm ducts
Blockages that prevent the release of sperm.
Lifestyle and environmental factors
Exposure to toxins, alcohol, tobacco, and drug use.
Types of fertility tests at Andrología Barcelona
At Andrología Barcelona, we offer a wide range of fertility tests for men. Our comprehensive approach ensures that each patient receives a detailed evaluation and an accurate diagnosis. The fertility tests are divided into two main categories: the basic study and the advanced study. These tests are designed to identify any issues that may be contributing to male infertility and provide a personalized treatment plan.
Basic male fertility study
The initial evaluation includes:
- Complete medical history: Personal history (general, reproductive, and sexual), partner history, and family history.
- Physical examination: General, neurological, and genital evaluation.
- Analytical and hormonal assessment: General biochemical and full hormonal evaluation (LH, FSH, Total and Free Testosterone, TSH, Prolactin, GH, and ACTH).
- Repeated semen analysis: At least 2 semen analyses within 2-4 weeks after 3-5 days of sexual abstinence, interpreted according to the WHO 2010 values.
Advanced male fertility study
Based on the findings from the basic study, a personalized advanced study is carried out:
Urine culture or fractionated culture: If infection is suspected.
Post-orgasmic urine study: In cases of absent ejaculation to rule out retrograde ejaculation.
Sexually transmitted disease serologies: When assisted reproduction techniques are considered.
Genetic studies:
- Karyotype in blood
- Y chromosome microdeletions
- CFTR gene mutations
- FISH techniques
- DNA fragmentation
Imaging studies:
- Scrotal ultrasound: If scrotal pathologies are suspected (testicular tumors, clinical varicocele).
- Transrectal ultrasound: To rule out agenesis of the vas deferens or obstruction of the ejaculatory ducts.
- Pituitary MRI (Turkish saddle): If pituitary pathology is suspected (hormonal alterations).
- Vas deferens vesiculography: To check the permeability and morphology of the distal seminal tract.
Testicular biopsy (TESE or micro-TESE):
Indicated in patients with azoospermia of uncertain cause to differentiate between obstructive and secretory. The extracted gametes can be used for assisted reproduction techniques (IVF-ICSI).
