Penile prosthesis for erectile dysfunction
Types of penile prostheses
There are different types of penile prostheses: malleable (semi-rigid) and inflatable (two or three components). The implantation of prostheses results in one of the highest satisfaction rates (70-87%) among the various solutions for erectile dysfunction.
3-component hydraulic prosthesis
Inflatable devices, and specifically this model, is the most advanced and the one that most patients prefer, as it achieves more natural erections.
This penile prosthesis consists of two cylinders implanted in both corpora cavernosa of the penis, an activation mechanism located in the scrotum, and a reservoir placed near the bladder. The mechanism is simply a hydraulic system that moves fluid between the various components of the prosthesis to increase or decrease the rigidity of the penis according to the patient’s needs.
The entire prosthesis is implanted through a small incision of just 2 centimeters in the scrotum, which is almost imperceptible. With current models, both erection and detumescence (return to the flaccid state) are almost identical to physiological conditions.
Malleable penile prosthesis
This type of prosthesis consists of two flexible rods that are surgically placed in the corpora cavernosa of the penis.
Unlike inflatable penile prostheses, the malleable ones do not require a pumping system and maintain a constant rigidity.
To use it, the man will need to manually adjust the penis to an erect position for sexual activity and then return it to a flaccid position after the act.
