No-scalpel Circumcision

What is phimosis?

Phimosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the foreskin opening, which prevents the full or partial exposure of the glans. This condition makes it difficult to maintain proper penile hygiene and often causes pain during sexual intercourse.

What are the possible causes of phimosis?

The main causes of this disorder are usually congenital, meaning individuals are born with it. However, young and adult men can also develop this condition, especially those with diabetes, due to blood circulation issues. This can lead to an increased incidence of infections, chronic inflammation, and slow healing.

What happens if I don't treat phimosis?

  • Short-term, difficulties with hygiene, bad odor, penile infections (balanitis), urinary infections, and discomfort during sexual intercourse may arise.
  • Long-term, difficulty in maintaining good hygiene increases the risk of penile cancer, although this is a very rare occurrence.

What treatment alternatives are available?

There are two treatment options:

  • Conservative treatment: This involves the manual retraction of the foreskin, occasionally accompanied by topical corticosteroid cream. It is the first-line treatment for children.
  • Surgical treatment: This is definitive and is recommended for the majority of phimosis cases in adults.

The solution for phimosis: no-scalpel circumcision with an automatic stapler.

At AndrologiaBarcelona, we use a second-generation device (with a silicone line between the staples) to perform this treatment.

The automatic device adapts to each patient and allows for a circumcision to be performed in just a few minutes without the need for sutures. This reduces both intraoperative and postoperative risks, making it easier for the patient to manage the surgical wound at home.

What are the advantages of this type of circumcision?

  • It is performed under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis, without the need for hospitalization.
  • The procedure is standardized, providing greater security and easier management.
  • It offers better aesthetic results compared to the more nodular appearance of the conventional suturing method.
  • The operating time is much shorter, taking 3 to 5 minutes, compared to the 30 to 45 minutes required for the classic technique.
  • There is less pain during the procedure and in the postoperative period.
  • Less bleeding and postoperative edema.
  • Shorter healing time, with no need to remove sutures.
  • Stainless steel staples fall off on their own within 3 to 4 weeks.
