Prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men over the age of 50 and is caused by malignant growth of the prostate. It usually does not present clinical symptoms, or the symptoms closely resemble those of BPH.

For this reason, at Andrología Barcelona, we recommend annual prostate screenings starting at age 50 (European Association of Urology [EAU] guidelines 2016) through a blood test to measure PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) and an initial digital rectal exam.

Prostate screening for the diagnosis of cancer

Currently, thanks to annual prostate screenings, prostate cancer is diagnosed in the early stages of the disease , and several curative treatments are available, including surgery, radiation therapy, and focal therapies.

The Relationship between prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of erectile dysfunction due to its effects on the male reproductive system. When a patient develops a tumor in the prostate, it can affect the structures and nerves essential for achieving and maintaining an erection. Additionally, the treatments required to cure prostate cancer, such as radical prostatectomy, can damage the nerves and blood vessels necessary for erectile function as a result.

Although erectile dysfunction does not necessarily occur after prostate cancer, if this is your case, it’s important to know that you’re not alone—there is hope for all men suffering from sexual impotence.

At Andrología Barcelona, we are experts in erectile dysfunction in Barcelona, and the treatment options we offer are very diverse. Depending on your specific situation, we can recommend one treatment or another.

What treatments are currently available for erectile dysfunction?

Although we have effective treatments for managing the disease, functional side effects (urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction) are common. For this reason, it is vitally important to undergo a rehabilitation process following radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy.

In the event of erectile dysfunction, there are multiple highly effective treatment options available. Furthermore, since oral medications do not always work for all men, it is essential to be informed about all available options. Finding a solution that allows the patient to regain control, integrity, and a satisfying sex life is our top priority.
