Pills for erectile dysfunction
The main goal in the treatment of patients with erectile dysfunction is to identify and address the underlying cause of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms. Erectile dysfunction is a condition that can be related to factors that can be modified or reversed, such as certain lifestyle habits or the use of medications. Generally, these factors are modified before starting specific treatment, or simultaneously with their use.
As a rule, erectile dysfunction can be successfully treated with current options, but a definitive solution is not achieved. This means the patient can have satisfactory sexual relations, but depending on the treatment.
The only exceptions are psychogenic erectile dysfunction, post-traumatic arterogenic dysfunction in young patients, and hormonal causes (for example, hypogonadism or hyperprolactinemia), which can potentially be cured with specific treatment.
How can oral medications help a patient with ED?
The goal of medications as a solution for erectile dysfunction is to improve blood flow to the penis. This will help the patient achieve and maintain an erection suitable for sexual activity. However, while they are effective for many men, they do not work in all cases, and their effectiveness can vary depending on the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction.
At Andrología Barcelona, we always explain to patients the importance of taking these medications under medical supervision, as they can interact with other medications and may be contraindicated in certain cases. In our Barcelona center, we have experts who specialize in providing solutions to erectile dysfunction problems and can offer guidance.
Oral Medications
Among the therapeutic options, we have medications that are administered orally, such as phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil). Depending on the patient’s needs, we will use the medication that best suits their requirements based on its pharmacokinetics.
Injectable Medications
Another therapeutic option involves using vasoactive agents (alprostadil) that can be administered intracavernously or intraurethrally. In some patients with hormonal disorders, such as hypogonadism, replacement therapy may be required for treatment.
How does each medicine affect and work?
Depending on the patient’s individual reaction to the drug, the duration of its effects, tolerance, price and ease of use, at Andrología Barcelona we recommend one type of medicine or another. Some of the most commonly used pharmaceuticals are:
Sildenafil (Viagra)
Commonly known as Viagra, this oral medication is usually taken 1 hour before sexual activity and can have an effect that lasts up to 4 hours. In some cases, it may interact with certain medications and foods, such as those containing nitrates.
Tadalafil (Cialis)
The most notable feature is its long duration: up to 36 hours. This makes it the best option for patients who want greater flexibility, meaning they can choose any time for sexual activity. For continuous daily use, a lower dose can be taken once a day, and it has no interactions.
Vardenadil (Levitra)
This medicine is orodispersible and its action is fast-acting, lasting up to 12 hours. In this case, it can interact with certain foods and medicines.
Avanafil (Spedra)
It is the newest option as it is the fastest acting compared to others in this class (15 to 30 minutes), and can last up to 6 hours.
Why is it important to treat sexual impotence?
Although erectile dysfunction is a benign disorder, it affects physical and psychosocial health and has a significant impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from it, as well as their partners and families.
Recent epidemiological data have revealed a high prevalence and incidence of erectile dysfunction worldwide. For example, the large community-based MMAS (Massachusetts Male Aging Study) reported an overall prevalence of erectile dysfunction of 52% in non-institutionalised men aged 40-70 years in the Boston region of the United States.
